INTENSE PULSE LIGHT (IPL)
This laser skin rejuvenation procedure can dramatically reduce the signs of ageing as well as treating rosacea, pigmentation, broken vessels, pore size and sun damage. The areas most commonly treated are face, neck, chest and hands.
Tell me about the treatment
The medical grade IPL/Laser equipment used at Skin on Allendale, provides controlled heat to the targeted areas, essentially ‘shattering’ the pigment into fragments. An IPL treatment is like being ‘flicked with a rubber band’, and is generally well-tolerated. After treatment, areas of pigmentation will initially darken, then lighten as the pigmentation sloughs off (7-14 days). An IPL treatment session lasts about 45 minutes (dependent on area being treated), with a follow up in 3-6 weeks. A series of between 1- 3 treatments is usually required to achieve the desired outcome. Some redness and swelling may appear following treatment. This usually subsides within 1-3 days. It is recommended to apply ice-packs to the treated area immediately and for the rest of the day. It is imperative to use a broad spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen every day to prevent further damage and Christine will talk you through this and advise on products most suitable. Any part of your face, neck and décolleté which has skin redness, telangiectasia (tiny veins) or brown spots can be treated. Light (low contrast) brown spots, which were previously difficult to resolve, respond very well. A program on the machine is selected, and the heating of the pigmented brown or red cells causes the therapeutic effect.
Tell me about the treatment?
When the pulse of light is delivered, you will experience a mild pinching or stinging sensation. Gel is recommended to cool the skin before vascular treatments but pain medicine is typically not required. Treatment time depends on the area of the body being treated. However, most treatments should take less than one hour. One to three treatments are usually sufficient to see results. Additional treatments may be recommended, especially for excessively sun-damaged skin. Immediately following treatment, brown spots will start to darken and your skin may appear slightly red. The treated area may be mildly swollen. This typically lasts a few hours and possibly a day or longer. Make-up can be applied to cover the redness.
When will I see results?
Within one to three weeks, the darkened spots will flake off and fade. Diffuse redness or telangiectasia will decrease and your mottled complexion will improve. New brown spots, telangiectasia and diffuse redness may appear with new sun damage; however they too can be treated. Remember to always apply broad-spectrum sunscreen when outdoors to minimize sun damage and the appearance of new spots and diffuse redness. Rosacea is chronic and cannot be "cured" with any laser or light source, however its appearance can be improved

What is diffuse redness?
Diffuse redness is a general appearance of facial redness, such as rosy cheeks. This condition is caused by dilated capillaries, resulting in an appearance of general redness, not discrete, well-defined vessels. The most commonly affected areas are the nose, forehead and cheeks. Diffuse redness is often associated with a condition called rosacea and it can be hereditary. Laser Genesis will help your appearance by gently treating and reducing this condition.
Tell me about the treatment?
Patients often describe the treatment as relaxing and therapeutic. You will experience a gentle warming of your skin's surface during the procedure as the laser handpiece is moved back and forth about 1/2 inch above your skin. By gently heating the upper dermis well below your skin's surface, Laser Genesis stimulates collagen regrowth. Additional heat is generated in dilated capillaries to reduce redness. You can immediately return to normal activities, wearing sunscreen if participating in outdoor activities. Before the treatment, your skin should be makeup free and, in some cases, you may be asked to shave the area to be treated. The treatment results are often subtle. On average, you may require four to six in order to achieve optimal results. Every patient's condition and needs vary. Although most patients report few if any side effects, the most common is a slight redness that disappears within a few hours of treatment.
